Pokerloco Review

Filed under: Sites, Poker — mail @ 11:56 am

This is the first in our series of Poker room reviews and it is a review of Pokerloco. Pokerloco is one of the smaller poker rooms in the Ongame network. They have a reputation of having great bonuses so for all you pros and semi-pros it’s a pretty decent place to play.

The playerbase is fairly bad at poker and this can give you a good edge of course. Especially on the lower limits where you can find plenty of fish.

The site and client have that annoying poker green color and it feels a bit old fasion. To me this is something that matters a bit but the cheery avatars make up for it.

How good is it? its a 3 out of 5, try it out here: Online Poker.

MySpace Review

Filed under: Sites — mail @ 10:49 am

Layout:

Oh my, this is a mess. You need a lot of intuition to handle this baby. Every page is packed with blocks of text, mostly adds, that makes it hard to use. It is just to spammy. When it comes to userpages the base layout is so foul it seems to give even the best web site designer problems, I have seen a lot of MySpace pages and about 5 of them have been decent, not a single one would have been acceptable as a real site. The idea with block of text or links or adds filling every square inch of a site just doesn’t cut it.

Feel:

Even though it looks like shit and the first impression is that every person using myspace must be blind it feels real in a way other sites don’t. Maybe it’s just the massive amount of user but I can think of a few other reasons more.

It is so easy to use, in a way, every housewife, pensionist and schoolkid can get an instant website. If you don’t know anything about css it’ll look like myspace-standard-ugly but it’s still an instant site.

You can see what people like, everyone is parading their favourite artist and best friends around on their sites. Even if you’ve never met this guy you know that he is a Ladytron fan and likes to hang out with Mike with the moustache.

Even important people use it, Sean Combs does it, David Spade too, everyone. Or at least some guy does it in their name, but it still feels important.

Useful?

A few bands have made a break on MySpace but that seems rather impossible now, it as turned out to be mostly bands spamming each other about gigs, new songs or different tools for spamming bands on myspace.

For the standard user it might be fun to be on the friendslist of a band you like or get a comment from a good looking girl but when if we are going to be truthful: It doesn’t mean anything, a MySpace friend just means someone you can spam and all good looking girls on myspace are guys trying to sell you stuff.

Ok you can of course use it to keep in contact with your real friends all over the world but come on, a blog or an instant messenger will do that better.

AceProject.org

Filed under: Election, Sites — mail @ 10:48 am

Aceproject.org is owned by a number of international organizations such as International IDEA and UN. The primary function of the site is the ACE Encyclopaedia which offers knowledge on elections and similar topics.

Content

The content of the election database is extensive. With huge resources this site has gathered information on elections in almost every country and with really high academic standards. Aceproject is definately a worldclass site when it comes to the material, but that might be expected with such heavy founders.

The layout

The layout is ok, it isn’t very easy to find your way around the site and it doesn’t look that exiting. I get the feeling that the only priority has been gathering the election information. Extra points for the ease with which you can choose language and that it is available in several languages I haven’t even heard of.

Useful?

Very, if you are looking for any kind of electoral information you can find it here. It easily competes with all other encyclopaedias in the election area and the extra weight of the organizations supporting it gives it trust.

Summary:

Go there if you are looking for information on: election

Omega 3 Site review

Filed under: Sites — mail @ 10:42 am
I didn’t know anything about Omega-3 when I was asked to review this site and now I know just a little more. www.omega-3.se is an info-site about omega-3, health aspects of omega-3 and recipes. The information has a high quality and is available in both English and Swedish.

Layout

A traditional site layout makes it easy for anyone with more then 5 minutes of internet experience to manuever the pages. Reasonable  colors (which is a personal demand) makes it easy and relaxing to read. It might need a few pictures or at least diagrams to keep me interested because the standard layout that is so good for readability can easily become rather dull.

Content

The content is sorted in 8 head categories plus news. The categories are; about omega-3, supplements, food, disease, pregnant, children, vegetarian and recipes. The pages aren’t really packed with information but for me, that didn’t know anything about the subject, it is enough. The only category I found a bit bleak was recipes which has only 1 recipe, to it’s advantage I might add that it was a recipe for salmon.

A really nice thing is the list of references, more sites should present their material like that, not only to give credit to the author of the base material but for the readers that want to deepen their knowledge.

Useful?

I believe so,  especially if they get more recipes (there is a possibility to send them suggestions). Ok, there isn’t really a lack of recipes on the net but it’s my belief that specialized sites like this have more to offer in that area.

Add Url Free

Filed under: Links — mail @ 10:27 am
Swedish search engine optimizer Jim Westegren has announced that his directory addurl-fee.com soon reaches 50.000 links. This makes it one of the truly big directories on the net.

The site: addurl-free.com

 Background:

People working with SEO (search engine optimization) wants links to their sites to get better results in search engines. One way of getting links is to add you site to a directory. There are quite a few directories out there and some of them are liked a lot by the search engines.

The function:

Submitting

It is easy to submit to the directory and it is well edited, your submission gets a fast respons. The usual system on directories this big and with this high pagerank is to validate free submissions last, this is the case here as well but they must be working hard because you generally get the results within a week.

Pagerank

Pagerank isn’t the best way of rating a site but it’s one of the ways to tell how google feels about a site, and that is of course important when it comes to directories like these.  Addurl-free.com has a pagerank of 5 and that is a very high rate for a directory. This means that this site is liked by google and that means that the links coming out from it are liked by google.

Detail page

One of the advantages of this site compared to other similar is the detail page. Every site that is approved for a listing in the directory gets its own detail page. This is good when it comes to SEO because links mean more when the come from a page with related info and not to many outbound links.

Summary:

This is a free service and it is good for your site to be listed. There is absolutely no reason for you not to submit you site.
About the owner:

Jim got famous after his accomplishments in the SEO world championships and is working alomst exclusivly with link building today. He is managing swedens biggest forum on SEO and has a number of useful services such as the link building service.

Link Vault review

Filed under: Sites — mail @ 10:25 am
The site: Link-vault.com

What is it?

Link vault is a text link trade service. You can automaticly trade links with a number of pages sorted in categories. The links are search engine friendly and that means they can give you a boost in the search engine result pages.

How good is it?

I have tested link vault for a few months and the results are nice. I’ve gotten a large number of links for the sites I’ve signed up with. The links are of very different qualities but that is reasonable and a less valuable link will cost you less in vaultage. despite the troubles installing (installed on a lot of different kind of sites and they all took a different approach before getting it to work) I believe this is a good service.

How it works

You sign up, add a site to the program and add a little codesnippet to your site. This can be a bit troublesome and might demand a little markup-skill but it can be done. After a while links start showing up on your site and depending on the number of links you chose to display (you can chose 1-5) on every page, how many pages there are and what your pagerank is, you will start getting points of “vaultage”. Vaultage is a sort of currency that you spend on linkprograms. You add a site to recieve links, with an anchor-text of your choice and soon incoming links will start appearing automaticly. You get links to an equal value of the links you are displaying.

 The support

They have a support forum but it leaves a lot wanting. Itis hard to get answers to your questions and you need them because setting it up can be a pain.

Problems we had

Except the work with installing LV there was another problem, for two days link-vault was so laggy we had to remove it from a site. It slowed down the whole site so much it hardly loaded at all.

Travian

Filed under: Games — mail @ 10:24 am
Travian is an online game available in several different languages such as English, German and Swedish.

The game is friendly looking with nice litte cartoon figures as soldiers that you can bash each others villages with. The site itself is relatively ok even though it might be a bit slow to load sometimes.  The translations on the other hand are sub-standard, lots of errors in the interface makes it look almost silly (The original language is German).

The Game

As a web based game it is about ok. There are much better games out there but it can be fun for a few hours. Compared to the old ArchMage it has a huge number of flaws and here are a few of them:

It is time base, you start building something and it will take 40 minutes then you have to start the next building after that. This makes it impossible to compete if you don’t wish to play _all the time_.

You have to pay for extras. If you don’t pay for extra production or defensiv/offensive bonuses you are at a heavy disadvantage.

The tech tree is extremely boring, developing your litte village doesn’t really take it anywhere.

There is a map. You are placed on a global map which makes playing together with actual friends harder. It would be ok if you could choose starting position with your village but you can’t.

Summary

It is not worth it to play this game more then a couple of hours and it is absolutely not worth it to pay anything for this experience.

Poker Software

Filed under: Poker — mail @ 10:24 am
What is a poker software and what do you use it for?

There are a few different possibilities and a few possible features in a poker software. One is poker opponent statistics. Getting instant statistics about poker opponents when playing online can be a serious advantage. If you play a lot of games against a lot of players it is soon impossible to keep the knowledge you have about them inside your head.  Having the statistics in an application that smoothly runs on your computer makes this so much easier.

W here can I find it?

Pokeroffice can be found here: Poker software

What is good with it?

One of the big advantages with Pokeroffice is that it is much more than a poker statistics tool, it has features such as a poker odds calculator and much more. It is also free if you sign up with one of the major poker rooms through Pokeroffice.com.

You can download it here: Download Poker Software

It is really a very good software, you should try it.

The Death of Blogging

Filed under: blogs — mail @ 10:22 am
I wrote an article for UpDir.org about the blogging death of Sweden, a couple of reporters claim that blogging is dead and we prove them wrong.

A few newspapers has begun to talk about the death of the blogs. Since there is no real interest, they claim, there is no need for blogs and that will eventually stop people from writing. Lots of swedish journalists had blogs and then suddenly stopped blogging, all of them. They just decided one day to stop blogging. Claiming that blogging was dead. A few of them claimed that blogs made people abuse each other in comments and by mail, since it was so easy to stay anonymus.

Film Zone

Filed under: Sites — mail @ 10:21 am
Background

There are plenty of movie databases out there IMDB is probably the bigges, this does not mean it is the best though. What does it take to be a good film site?

A movie site:

I happened upon a site called Filmzon (it’s swedish and means Film Zone, reasonable since it is a Swedish site). it is a nice little site with lots of serious content. It is all in swedish so if you don’t understand it, don’t blame me.

The site works like a magazine or similar and you can find articles and review, most of them written by the editors of the site but there is a possiblity for members to post news. The articles are of the friendlier kind and you instantly notice the passion behind the site. Someone is working hard with the site just to make it available.

What of the reviews?

Well, to be honest they are of mixed quality, a few of them I really liked and agreed on but some might be considered a bit thin. This is something You and I could work on by submitting material to the administrators of course.

Summary?

A nice looking friendly site that needs a little more material, has good potential for exploding with content in the future.
